10 Years ago God started us down a path that would change everything. It was what we perceived as a call to start our family through adoption. 8 years ago we adopted our first son. 7 years ago we adopted our second. 6 years ago we began working with Luz y Vida, an orphanage for special needs children in Bogota, Colombia. Throughout all this we have felt a strong sense that this was much bigger than our family. We knew we were responsible for telling our story, encouraging others, helping others adopt, and speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves. An anchoring verse in Scripture has been Isaiah 1:17 where God says, “Learn to do right. Seek Justice. Encourage the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless. plead the case of the widow.” God cares for those who are vulnerable, especially the orphan. As our calling to the cause of the fatherless has become clearer, we now understand that through One17 we are to advocate for the orphan in Jesus’ name.
It’s great to have that clarity, but there are 163 million orphans in the world. There are tons of great people and great organizations doing great work for them. But the task of “advocating for the orphan” can still seem overwhelming. Where do you begin?
Prayer. We’ve become deeply convinced that most good things in life begin in prayer and are sustained through prayer. You may not be called to adopt, or foster, or support orphans who will not be adopted. But everyone can take up the cause of the fatherless in prayer.
So that’s where we being. Starting on Monday, November 5th, for 6 weeks we’ll post 30 prayers for orphans on this site. We’ll tweet and post to Facebook as well, so you can access them there. We’ll post one prayer Monday through Friday that should require less than 5 minutes of your day.
Join us. Let’s pray for orphans and see what God does in your life and in theirs.
