A child who has been deprived of parental care and has not been adopted.
One that lacks support, supervision, or care.
An orphan by definition is fatherless/motherless. The 163,000,000 orphans of the world are lacking at least one parent. They navigate the world without a father or a mother to support them, supervise them or care for their basic needs. Without that basic parental relationship, the world quickly becomes a lonely place. Being fatherless leaves a void that impacts how orphans view the world and relate to others. The world becomes a place where you must grow up fast and learn to fend for yourself while attempting to fill the father void.
Jesus taught us to address God as ‘Our Father’. Today we reflect on what that Father relationship means and ask him to reveal himself to orphans as their true Father.
His name is the Lord—
rejoice in his presence!
Father to the fatherless, defender of widows—
this is God, whose dwelling is holy.
Prayer: God we ask that you reveal yourself to the orphans of this world. God, we know that you are the Father to the fatherless. We know you are the defender of the weak. Father, we pray that all orphans know you as “Father.” That none would feel truly “fatherless.” Use your people today to demonstrate your Father’s heart to orphans. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
