“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” –John 14:15-21
In his final hours with his disciples, Jesus reassures them by evoking a powerful image when he says that he will not leave them as “orphans.” He promises that he will always be with us. He promises that he will ask the Father to give us an advocate, the Holy Spirit.
That’s a powerful promise. Orphans know what it’s like to be left. They can easily feel forgotten.
This week our hope has been that the Father is revealing his heart for orphans to you and that you are joining with us in taking up the cause of the orphan in prayer. In the coming weeks our prayers will be focusing on specific types of orphans, actions, and people who God is using to care for orphans. But today we want to commit ourselves again to advocating for the orphan in prayer – to not forget.
Prayer: God, thank you for always being with us. Thank you for the Holy Spirit. God, move in our hearts today so that we might have more of your heart for orphans. Father, we commit ourselves again to advocate for the orphan in your name. Reassure those who are taking up the cause of the fatherless all over the world that you are with them – that you will never leave or forsake them. And God, we pray that all orphans may come to know the powerful abiding presence of your Spirit in their lives. That they would know that they are not forgotten by you. Give them eyes to see you. Show yourself to them in someway today. In Jesus name, Amen.
We’re excited by what we’ve heard from some of you already. We’d love to know how the prayer experience is going for you. Comment or shoot a quick email to email@example.com. Prayer 6 will be posted on Monday.
