This week we turn our prayer focus to Foster Care. Foster care is temporary care for children who must be separated from their biological parents or guardians due most often to neglect or abuse.
Historically the people of God took on this care. They saw it as part of their responsibility to provide for orphans. In Deuteronomy we read:
When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. Deuteronomy 24:19-21
We also find the practice of orphans being placed with “worthy widows” who were then provided for by the larger community. This continued in various forms throughout the ages – some good situations, some not so good.
In the 1900’s foster care became much more regulated. Home inspections and licensing became the work of social agencies and government. It helped move children out of institutions and into homes.
But that move did not and does not release the people of God from their call to care for the orphan.
A perpetual problem with Foster Care is that there aren’t enough families willing and licensed to foster. So today, we’re going to pray for more families to answer the call to foster:
Prayer: Father, thank you for the privilege and responsibility you’ve given us to care for the orphan. We ask that you call more of your people to foster care. God, we also ask that you provide strength, support and respite to those families and individuals who are currently fostering. We ask that your people take up the cause of the orphan in the form of fostering. In Jesus Name, Amen.
