Yesterday we started praying for the orphans who won’t be adopted. There are millions of them globally. Their care must come through other forms. Unfortunately, when holistic orphan care isn’t offered, the alternatives aren’t great for those left behind.
Today’s post has been delayed because I’ve been at a loss for words. So I’ve borrowed some from Jane Aronson CEO and Founder of Worldwide Orphans Foundation who wrote an article about this issue for CNN. She says,
“What happens to the children left behind? Some are institutionalized, and others are forced to live on the street or in refugee camps or as slaves to other families: for example, restaveks in Haiti. Children are bought and sold as prostitutes or forced into a life of crime, drug dealing and alcoholism, and many are child laborers making up a large part of the major work force of countries abroad. Still others become child soldiers fighting ethnic wars in tyrant-run countries.”
The rest of this week, we’ll look at and pray for some specific scenarios, workers, and efforts in holistic orphan care. But today, let’s pray God’s protection over the children who will be “left behind” by the world, but not forgotten by our Father.
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. – Luke 12:6-7
Prayer: God, we understand that the world is broken. Again, we acknowledge our part in it’s brokenness and ask for your forgiveness. Father, we know that it isn’t your will that any child be left behind, sold into servitude, sex slavery, or war. But God we also know these are realities for many orphans. Father protect them. Send more workers who will offer holistic care to the most vulnerable of your children and more resources to those who are doing this important work. Show us if we have a part to play in that. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
